Understanding PDLC Smart Film
A simple, plain-language guide to how smart glass works, how it is installed, and why it matters for your business and the people you serve.
The Technology
What PDLC Smart Film Is
PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) film is an ultra-thin, self-adhesive layer applied directly to existing glass. It turns ordinary glazing into smart glass that switches between clear and private on demand — no replacement, no blinds.
How PDLC Technology Works
Microscopic liquid crystals are suspended in a polymer film between transparent electrodes. Their orientation is controlled by electricity, instantly changing how the glass handles light.
How Liquid Crystals Change the Glass
With no power, the crystals scatter light in every direction and the glass appears frosted for privacy. When energised, the crystals align so light passes straight through — and the glass becomes fully transparent.
How Electricity Controls Transparency
A low, safe voltage aligns the crystals for transparency; switching the power off returns the glass to frosted instantly. It is the same principle behind modern digital displays, refined for architectural glass.
Installation
The Installation Process
We survey your glazing, cut the film to size, apply it to the glass surface, and discreetly route low-voltage wiring to your chosen control. Most rooms are completed in a few hours with minimal disruption.
Retrofit vs New Glass
Our self-adhesive film retrofits onto your existing glass — far more cost-effective than replacing windows. For new builds we also supply smart laminated glass panels, so there is a perfect option whatever your project stage.
Performance
Power Consumption
Smart film uses only around 5 watts per square metre when transparent and zero power when frosted — a fraction of a lightbulb, with real energy savings from reduced cooling and glare.
Response Time
The switch between clear and frosted takes under a tenth of a second — instant privacy exactly when you need it, with no waiting and no visible fade.
Reliability
Safety
The film runs on extra-low voltage, generates no heat, and holds glass together if broken. It is safe to touch, safe around occupants, and fully compliant for commercial and public spaces.
Durability
Engineered for daily commercial use, the film resists scratching, yellowing and humidity — performing reliably across years of constant switching in busy environments.
Maintenance
Maintenance is minimal — clean with standard glass products and a soft cloth. There are no moving parts, no blinds to break, and no mechanisms to service.
Lifespan
Quality smart film is rated for tens of thousands of switching cycles and typically lasts well over a decade in normal use — a long-term investment, not a consumable.
Control
Remote Control Options
Control a single pane or an entire building from anywhere. Smart film integrates with the control method that suits you — from simple switches to full automation.
Wall Switch Control
A discreet wired switch gives instant, reliable privacy at a touch — ideal for meeting rooms, consulting rooms and any space where simplicity matters.
Mobile App Integration
Operate your glass from a phone or tablet — schedule privacy modes, group panels, and set scenes so spaces adapt automatically throughout the day.
Building Management System Integration
Connect smart film to your BMS to coordinate lighting, blinds, climate and privacy together — centralised control across an entire floor or portfolio.
Why It Matters
Business Benefits
Instant privacy, natural light preserved, lower energy bills, reduced glare, and a premium modern aesthetic — smart glass elevates the experience for occupants and visitors while cutting running costs and removing the need for blinds.
